Best Practice

Everything we do at Toybox is built around one idea: children thrive when they feel happy, safe and part of a family. The words below were written by our staff, children and families together — our promise about how your child will be cared for, from their very first days with us to the day they’re ready for school.

A happy, settled start

From the moment your child joins us, our focus is belonging. Our team is warm, respectful and genuinely enjoys being together — and children feel that. We build strong, attached relationships so every child feels safe, listened to, and confident to explore. There’s laughter, cuddles, shared mealtimes and a real home-from-home atmosphere. As the children themselves tell us: they like their friends, they like the toys — and they like the grown-ups.

Learning and growing, every day

As children move through our rooms, we nurture them at every stage. We support their first steps, climbing and self-feeding; build language through stories, songs, Makaton and rich conversation; and grow confidence and friendships through play. We spend lots of time outdoors, give children plenty of sensory experiences, and help them express and name their emotions — so they become capable, curious little people.

Ready for the world
(and for school)

By the time children leave us, we want them to be confident learners and good communicators — able to make friends, manage their feelings, and take on simple tasks by themselves. We widen their horizons with real experiences: visits to the local library and shops, cooking, celebrating festivals, and intergenerational visits to Katherine’s House. It’s what builds “cultural capital” — the knowledge and experiences that prepare children for a happy, successful future.

Written by our staff, children and families — because at Toybox, the best practice is the one we live every day.
